Dementia and the loss of Driving Privileges

The Perspective of Family Members

In the future, a significant number of families will have to go through a process of deciding when a family member who suffers from dementia should stop driving.

The purpose of this study is to highlight the loss of driving privileges in connection with dementia and to collect knowledge on the process in a Danish context. Only few studies on the topic have ever been carried out, and none in a Danish context.

The study provides insight into the decision-making process regarding the loss of driving privileges, the challenges attached to the process and why these challenges arise. The survey also addresses how best to support the key persons involved in the process.

The survey is based on a questionnaire survey among family members of people with dementia and general practitioners, and a number of qualitative interviews with family members of people suffering from dementia.
